About Plant Medicine

  • Ayahuasca can serve as a powerful tool for physical healing, spiritual growth, and emotional well-being. It can be described as a vast, gleaming mirror, reflecting the root cause of trauma, emotional unrest, fear, and unresolved issues. These insights can lead to deeper understanding and provide further tools for the excavation of the psyche. It's crucial to have a safe setting for process and skilled Healers and Facilitators to help you make sense of what comes up.

With proper screening, preparation, onsite care, and integration support, we can maximize healing potential and minimize risk. However, there are certain medical conditions that are contraindicated with plant medicine, including (but not limited to) schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and psychosis. Additionally, certain medications are contraindicated and must be discussed with your doctor to determine if Ayahuasca is safe and if it is possible to change or taper them.

Beyond medical contraindications, Ayahuasca is safe, and time tested. It can be risky if served by someone without proper experience and training, lack of support and improper setting; or 'medicine stacking,' wherein numerous different plant medicines are taken within a short period of time.

At Reunion, safety, wellbeing, and healing are at the core of what we do. Our aim is to create a safe and supportive environment, encompassing all aspects of the healing process, so that everyone gets the most out of their experience.

Beyond our team of Facilitators, medical professionals in our on-site clinic participate in the screening and preparation, including stringent medical protocol and intake process. This includes a detailed medical questionnaire ensuring everyone has a safe and fulfilling experience, whilst mitigating risk of potential contraindications. In addition, our clinic staff is trained in Emergency First Response and has access to a fully stocked medical kit and instruments. During your stay, our safety protocols allow you to rest comfortably, while our staff provides a sanctuary for your emotional and spiritual wellbeing.

Ayahuasca is a powerful experience, with physical cleansing, emotional releases and mental insights, acting as a catalyst toward a lifelong healing process. To create lasting change, integration is key. We empower everyone with the tools needed to enact the benefits of such a catalyst into their day-to-day life. Beyond that, we foster a supportive community to inspire connection and accountability. Our team has come from healing centers the world over, and there is a clear need for a long-term relationship with their process.

  • We hold ceremonies in a large circular temple (a maloca), which is a traditional ceremonial space used for Ayahuasca and Psilocybin ceremonies.

During the ceremony, everyone has their own mattress with pillows, a blanket, and a bucket in case the need to purge arises. There are bathrooms within the temple, and our Facilitators are there to help when needed.

  • Medicine works differently for everyone. Visual imagery, while it can be part of the experience, is often less common than publicized. Ayahuasca works on an energetic level and may be tough to perceive visually. The experience can take many forms, such as physical/energetic work — bodily sensations, physical purging through yawning, laughing, crying, sweating, vomiting, or shaking, deep thought, emotions coming to the surface, mental imagery, reliving past experiences, and/or a feeling of oneness and connectedness. It is different for everyone and can vary greatly from ceremony to ceremony. While visions can occur for some people, it is not necessarily the bulk of the experience and in some cases can be a distraction. For others, visions can be a helpful way to understand the healing narrative. We encourage everyone to let go of expectations and surrender to the flow of the experience — you will get exactly what you need, even if it is not what is expected or desired.

In some cases, the healing is intangible during the ceremony. If you do not receive direct insight during the ceremony, part of the integration work is to remain open so that insights may unfold in the days, weeks, and months to come. The energetic work done in ceremony has laid the mental, emotional, and spiritual foundation for transformation.

  • It is normal to purge, including vomiting and diarrhea, during ceremony. If you need help getting to the bathroom, our Facilitators are there to help. Purging can take many different forms: crying, yawning, sweating, shaking, and laughing, among other things. Our Facilitators are trained to help in a loving and swift way in case the need arises. As we like to say, “everything is normal” during an Ayahuasca ceremony, and whatever happens, is perfectly fine — nothing to be ashamed of or worry about.

  • Choosing a place to participate in this sacred experience is an extremely important. At Reunion, your ceremonial experience will consciously blend traditions, expertise, and safety in the highest degree. We uphold traditional practices through an interdisciplinary approach because these sacred medicines, when administered in a safe and respectful way, have tremendous healing capabilities. Physical safety, emotional well-being, and mental healing are of utmost importance to us. We are committed to each Guest by maintaining a respectful, non-judgmental space for everyone to heal. Our team has a diverse and deep experience level, having trained and practiced all over the world. Our main goal is to create a nourishing environment so everyone can have the deepest healing experience possible.

Journey Preparation

  • At Reunion, we have had many Guests who have had little to no experience with psychedelics, and they have found profound healing with plant medicine. Many times, less experience is beneficial. It can make it easier to have a full and deep experience without preconceived notions. Going in with an open mind is a key component in how much you get out of the ceremony.

Working with plant medicine is a process, which is why we recommend multiple ceremonies. It can take time to build a trusting relationship with plant medicine so that deeper work can unfold. It is for this reason that our minimum retreat stay is seven nights. We have found that at least three ceremonies, along with integration support, helps everyone to process what has come up and allows for a deep level of healing.

  • Once your registration has been confirmed, you will receive an information packet that will include our dietary and preparation guidelines. The diet is about creating an environment within your body that gives the medicine the greatest opportunity to permeate, cleanse and heal. A diet that focuses on whole, organic foods (mostly plants) and less on an excess of salt, sugar, spices, and processed foods, sets the best conditions for the medicine work and wellbeing in general.

  • We recommend discontinuing all supplements seven days before your Reunion journey. The basic idea behind working with master plant teachers like Ayahuasca and Psilocybin is to be as clean and clear as possible. To maximize your experience, best practice is to stop the use of any other supplements, plant treatments, and synthetic drug treatments. If you can put these things on hold, then you will get a more direct connection with Ayahuasca and Psilocybin.

For CBD oil, we recommend refraining from using this for at least two weeks before and after your retreat. However, this is not medically contraindicated.

If there are any supplements or medications that you need to continue throughout your Reunion journey, please indicate this on your Intake Form during registration.

  • Ask your doctor to find out what vaccinations your government recommends for traveling to Costa Rica and be sure you're up to date. If you happen to be arriving from a country with a risk of yellow fever, the Costa Rican government requires proof of yellow fever vaccination. Reunion has fewer mosquitoes than most jungle locations due to the breeze coming off the ocean, but if you are concerned, please bring bug spray. If you anticipate participating in the plant medicine ceremonies, please avoid taking antimalarial medication for the retreat.
